Santa Fe New Mexican

Get ready for market

-

As summer stretches into August, the excitement in Santa Fe is growing. Locals and visitors alike know that the high point of summer comes during Santa Fe Indian Market, now just a week away. Indian Market, with 1,000 or more artists, galas, parties, openings and so many other events, is the biggest happening of the summer.

To help marketgoers navigate the many offerings, The New Mexican is proud once more to publish Indian Market magazine, the official Southwestern Association for Indian Arts guide to market.

It’s the only one with a complete artists directory, as well as a detailed map to events on and around the Santa Fe Plaza. (For those who love technology, download the Indian Market app to help guide your experience; you can find it at www.santafenewmexican.com/indian_market_app)

Events take place all week long, with Indian Market proper beginning Friday with the much-anticipated Best of Show ceremony and preview of award-winning art (Aug. 18) and continuing on and around the Plaza on Aug. 19 and 20.

Pick up your copy of Indian Market magazine inside the Sunday New Mexican and take time to read and enjoy it. That way, you can plan your strategy for Indian Market week.

(And, if you miss the Sunday paper, the magazine is available at the newspaper office, 202 E. Marcy St., and at various locations around downtown.)

From the modern cover featuring hoop dancer Shandien LaRance (taken by Kitty Leaken with styling by magazine creative director Deborah Villa), the magazine offers glimpses into the lives of contemporary artists. Take LaRance, an artist and dancer, who was interviewed for her cover story from Russia, where she was touring with the Cirque du Soleil. She’s the epitome of someone not just comfortable in two worlds, but who is conquering them.

Her tale is just one of the many stories you will find in Indian Market magazine. It’s a must read before the most exciting week of the year — the one leading up to the 96th Santa Fe Indian Market.
