Common-sense solutions to our city’s problems

- JIM WILLIAMSON Jim Williamson is a candidate for City Council, District 3.

Say goodbye to cronyism and movida for politically connected insiders at City Hall. My name is Jim Williamson, a candidate for District 3 city councilor — the Tierra Contenta and Airport Road corridor. My working-family, commonsense solutions to our city’s problems are found at JimWilliamsonD3.com. At City Hall, our people deserve total accountability and transparency while stomping out cronyism and movida, which in turn, protect our community resources.

As your councilor, I would personally call a motion for adoption of an anti-movida clause to our city code on day one. Here is that anti-movida clause: All local small businesses shall have equal and transparent opportunities to bid on city economic development grants and on all city contracting opportunities.

Economic development grant recipients shall be eligible for funding not to exceed 20 percent of the total economic development fund balance. This will allow for participation by all small local businesses, not just the politically connected. Potential economic development grant recipients who have a proven track record to independently earn revenue of $30,000 per day or have raised $1 million in cash through issuance of a private equity offering shall not be eligible to receive economic development grant funds, since they are already proven to be successful on their own and economic development grant funds are to be reserved for local small businesses that have not yet reached this level of growth.

Potential economic development grant recipients shall disclose to the city their federal income tax form 1040 for individual filers or form 1120 for corporate filers so that community resources are protected from undisclosed federal tax liability. Members of the governing body, including the eight city councilors and the executive mayor, shall disclose if they were politically supported by a potential economic development grant or city contract recipient. If a member of the governing body did receive support, he or she shall recuse themselves from voting on granting the economic development grant or city contract.

Local small businesses that hire Santa Fe employees shall receive priority endorsement in city contracting if they are able to provide competitive bids for their services on city contracting needs. The late, great George Carlin said, “It’s a big club, and you ain’t in it.” Let’s allow everyone in our community equal access to bid on community resources, whether or not they are in the club.
