-adv. Aug. 20, 1967: LAS VEGAS — The U.S. Senate subcommittee on economic development wrapped up its impressive three-day survey of northern New Mexico’s problems here late Saturday, with officials now facing the task of sifting through reams of testimony and putting together a program for action.
Sen. Joseph M. Montoya, D-N.M., who chaired the meetings in Albuquerque, Espanola, Taos and Las Vegas, called for a two-pronged effort to cope with both immediate and long-range economic needs of the area.
Aug. 20, 1992: In a state that is almost synonymous with hot air ballooning, the sight of balloons above the rooftops of the state’s capital may become a thing of the past.
The City Council is expected to hold a public hearing soon on a proposal to ban balloon launchings and landings within the city limits. The proposed law would also require balloons over the city to fly at an elevation of at least 1,000 feet.
The ordinance is the result of months of frustrated attempts by city officials to informally regulate hot air balloonists, city officials said. From the recent talk of city councilors, it appears that the ordinance is likely to be adopted.
