From The Santa Fe New Mexican: Aug. 22, 1917: State College, N.M., Aug. 22 Believing that the farmers of New Mexico have a first mortgage on the New Mexico College of Agricultur­e and Mechanic Arts, President A.D. Crile of that institutio­n is making every effort to have the State College to extend every accommodat­ion to the farmers and to their children. As a result of this policy, Dr. Crile announced that hereafter it will be possible for farmers and mechanics to attend the State College and take a [short course] and always receive proper credits toward a bachelor’s degree.

Aug. 22, 1967: Gov. David F. Cargo took some verbal pot-shots at the Four Corners Economic Developmen­t commission today, charging that too much money will be spent on planning and complainin­g that he was not asked to testify at the commission’s hearings.

Speaking of the hearings themselves, conducted in northern New Mexico last week by U.S. Sen. Joseph M. Montoya, D-NM, Cargo said, “they pretty much covered the things that have been covered a number of times.”

Aug. 22, 1992: Moments after the best of show artwork was selected for the 1992 Indian market, the event’s top judge said Friday the contest should be changed or eliminated because the same artists win year after year. Stella Naranjo Thompson, an artist from Santa Fe who chairs the judging committee, said previous winners of the best of show category should not be allowed to compete again so non-winners have a “chance to reach master’s status.”

“Step aside and let the new guys come in.”

Judge Ruben Rose agreed that the contest should be dropped. “It’s like you’re given five kids and then you’re told you have to choose one and kill four,” he said. “I won’t vote.”
