Santa Fe New Mexican

Moving along?

-

Changes could be coming to the Santa Fe Trails bus system — so before decisions are made, people need to pay attention. What’s being discussed is possibly merging the city bus system with the North Central Regional Transit District. The notion is that a combined regional system could make transportation in the region more convenient, as well as save Santa Fe the costs of running a bus system. A merger also could mean savings for all sides on the number of employees, fueling stations, garages and vehicles. The idea is to streamline service and save tax dollars, both worthy goals.

Public meetings are taking place this week to discuss the concept — a $150,000 study has all the details on potential and pitfalls. We are sure that we are not the only ones with questions. Here’s the schedule for meetings:

North Central Regional Transit District board meeting: 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 28, 1327 N. Riverside Drive, Española

Special City Council meeting: 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, 200 Lincoln Ave., Santa Fe

Public meeting: 6:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 28, Santa Fe Community Convention Center, O’Keeffe Room, 201, W. Marcy St.

Public meeting: 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 29, Genoveva Chavez Community Center, 3221 Rodeo Road

If you care about public transportation, show up, ready to ask questions.
