The past 100 years
From The Santa Fe New Mexican:
Aug. 31, 1917: The fight that Senator Andrieus A. Jones, of New Mexico, has been making to secure the taxation of the undistributed profits of corporations has been one of the big features of the senate discussion of the war tax bill and has attracted nation-wide attention to New Mexico’s junior representative in the upper house of congress. In the course of the senate’s consideration of the bill Senator Jones has met and overcome the strongest arguments advanced by those opposed to his plan, and has established a record as a master of debate.
Aug. 31, 1967: On this eve of Fiesta 1967, we were reminded by a friend of an editorial which appeared in the New Mexican six years ago, on March 26, 1961. The Editorial, “We Don’t Know Why, But We Do,” was written by former editor Tony Hillerman. We feel it is worth repeating, if for no other reason than to help set the tone for this year’s Santa Fe Fiesta.
Aug. 31, 1992: The black bear won designation as New Mexico’s official state mammal nearly 40 years ago, but these days oso negro has been pitted in a political tug-of-war against another beloved animal the hunting hound. In a growing controversy that will be settled by the state Game Commission, hunting guides, outfitters and amateur houndsmen want permission to use dogs to chase but not kill bears outside the regular hunting season. In some cases, the goal is to keep dogs in shape. Other dog owners just want the pleasure of seeing hounds do what they’re trained to do.
