‘Los’ science books ‘no saben todo’
Era el tiempo de las vacaciones. Canutito had already gotten bored jugando con todos los toys that he had gotten pa’Crismes. He was en un mood más serious esa tarde. He took out su libro de science and began looking through it porque tenía que hacer study pa’cuando la escuela started again en el Año Nuevo. He didn’t want to read about las plantas o los animales como los dinosaurs though, so Canutito flipped over pa’l end del libro donde estaba la sección de astromony.
It was la primera vez que Canutito had even noticed que habían more planets en el Solar System además del Earth. He saw que los planetas todas hacían revolve around del Sol y que el planeta que estaba closest to the Sun se llamaba Mercury. He continued estudiando el mapa del Sistema Solar and he saw que el planeta que estaba between Mercurio y el Earth se llamaba Venus. Just beyond the Earth, un poco más lejos del sol estaba Mars. Con su dedo, Canutito continued haciendo trace más lejos del sol and he found los planetas más grandes como Jupiter, Saturn y Neptune. Finalmente, Canutito found una planetita bien chiquita named Pluto.
“Wow!” he exclaimed de repente, “I didn’t know que there were tantos mundos diferentes!”
Just then, Grama Cuca happened to walk by and said to him, “Sí, m’hijo, there are many worlds out there porque Dios es muy grande. We only know about our planet, que se llama ‘Tierra’, porque nosotros vivimos aquí, pero Dios puede nombrar a todas las estrellas in the universe una por una no matter que tan lejos estén.”
“You mean to tell me, grama,” Canutito prodded her, “que hay many more planets y stars en el universo beyond el Solar System?”
“Oh sí, m’hijo,” Grama Cuca replied, “y el universo todavía está expanding even more.”
”Este science book dice que el universe came about por causa de algo que se llama ‘el Big Bang’, grama,” Canutito said to her.
”Lo que that science book no dice,” Grama Cuca said calmly, “es que ese ‘Big Bang’ was just a thought that was born en la mente de mi Tatita Dios. Con sólo thinking about it, Dios creó a todo el universo.”
”Pero why is it que all the planets were named for strange dioses como Júpiter, Saturno, Neptuno, Plutón, Marzo, Venus y Mercurio, grama?” Canutito asked.
”Fue porque los scientists que hicieron name the planets no sabían muncho, m’hijo,” grama said. If they had asked me, I could have told them all que the planet they call ‘Jupiter’ is really known in New Mexico as ‘la estrella de la mañana’ y que the planet Venus is really ‘la estrella de la oración.”
“Grama,” Canutito prefaced, “did you have to aprender los nombres de todos esos dioses extraños for whom the planets are named, when you were en la escuela?”
“Some students did,” replied grama, “pero I had una mestra bien smartota whom just taught us to memorize la sentence ‘My very educated mother just served us nine pickles’ y cuando tomábamos la primera letra de cada word, era también the first letter of each of the planets porque we didn’t want to tener ningún strange god before us.”
“That is so cool!” Canutito said, todo impressed, pero just at that moment, Grampo Caralampio came into the room.
”M’hijo,” he said, “does it says en ese libro de ciencias what the name of the moon and the sun are?
“I don’t think que la luna y el sol have any names, grampo.” Canutito said.
“That just goes to show you que los science books no saben todo, m’hijo,” Grampo Caralampio said. “Aquí en Nuevo Méjico we have un dicho that says: “La luna se llama Lola y el sol se llama Manuel. Manuel madruga al trabajo y se aleja de su mujer.”
“The moon is named Lola and Manuel is her spouse. Manuel goes to work early; she stays in the house.” Canutito translated.
Just then the winter moon rose up en el cielo and grama said, “Here comes mi Comadre ‘Lola.’ ” Canutito just smiled porque comprendió just what she meant …
