Horsemen tie with struggling Bobcats

-

Mike Feldewert wasn’t going to look at Albuquerque Bosque School’s record and think this was a down year. Even though last year’s Class 1A/4A runner-up was just 1-7-1 heading into Thursday’s nondistrict match against St. Michael’s at Christian Brothers Complex, Feldewert felt a 1-all tie reflected well on his Horsemen. After all, six of the Bobcats’ losses were against 5A and 6A teams, including to Los Alamos and Albuquerque Academy.

“It was a good result against a good team,” said Feldewert, the St. Michael’s head coach.

Bosque School (1-7-2) got the scoring started in the 35th minute on a goal that went over St. Michael’s goalkeeper Isaiah Vigil’s head.

“It was from distance,” Feldewert said.

St. Michael’s (2-4-2) knotted it at 1-all when sophomore Berkley Reynolds sent a free kick into the penalty box, and Wesley Graham headed it into the back of the net in the 54th minute.

“It was just a beautiful goal,” Feldewert said.

Both teams had their chances over the last 46 minutes, but the defenses tightened when they needed to. Vigil made a big stop on a breakaway in the second overtime, and the Horsemen sailed several opportunities over the goal.

Feldewert liked the way Reynolds, Hayden Lee and Wyatt Hoyle played on defense.

Wyatt, he shut down his side of the field,” Feldewert said.

Meanwhile, the Lady Bobcats made sure their lone goal stood up in Albuquerque. Not that the Lady Horsemen didn’t have their chances.

“We had 10 or 12 shots in the second half,” St. Michael’s head coach Gerzain Chavez said. “We dominated the game, and our midfield took over. We just couldn’t score. They had a good goalie who made several plays, but I felt like it was our best game so far this year.”

The Lady Wolves rebounded from their nondistrict loss to Santa Fe Prep by opening up District 1-1A play in convincing fashion with a 25-12, 25-19, 25-7 sweep in Albuquerque.

Every single Waldorf server recorded at least one case, with Rose Moon reaching double-digits with 10 in just one turn at serve. Eliana Blum had four aces overall, and Nicoya Dant three.

Moon had 11 kills, while Brianna Poole added five and Martine Perez four. Hannah Laga-Abram handed out 18 assists.

Waldorf (7-2 overall) takes two weeks off before playing Coronado at home on Oct. 3.

MONTE DEL SOL 3, PEÑASCO 0

Lia Fukuda did a little bit of everything against the Lady Panthers in a nondistrict match in Genoveva Chavez Community Center, but she was effective at the net when the Lady Dragons needed her to close out a 25-12, 25-10, 28-26 win.

Fukuda scored 15 points off of her serve, dished out 10 assists, collected three kills and had a block. Two of her kills came in the final game, with her last kill giving Monte del Sol (3-1) a 27-26 lead.

“Game 3 was a little bit closer,” Lady Dragons head coach Chela Butler said. “I thought Peñasco’s hitters came alive, and they had the momentum a little bit. But we were able to close it out because of Lia, in particular.”

Lizbeth Nava had 11 assists, six digs and three kills, while Talia Flaherty had 12 kills and a pair of blocks. Briana Garcia chipped in with four kills and eight service points, while Arianna Gonzales had three kills and seven points off of her serve.
