Dragons pile goals on Desert Academy

-

Moises Cerda scored two goals and Ulises Gutierrez also found the back of the net twice as the Monte del Sol boys soccer team rallied for a 4-2 win Thursday on the road at Alto Park against Desert Academy (1-4).

Cerda spotted the Dragons (4-4-1) an early 1-0 lead before Desert Academy’s Sebastian Pearson-Kramer tied it on a penalty kick in the 25th minute. It remained tied until the Wildcats’ Cole Sullivan scored in the 46th minute early in the second half.

Monte del Sol tied it on a Gutierrez goal, then won it going away by goals by Cerda and Gutierrez. The last two came after Pearson-Kramer strained a calf muscle and sat out the final 20 minutes.

Dragons head coach Friedrich Rothdach said he experimented with his lineup in the first half since it was a nondistrict match. He went back to a more traditional lineup for the final 40 minutes.

At Perez-Shelley Memorial Gymnasium, the Lady Horsemen completed the city sweep with a 25-21, 15-25, 25-15, 25-22 win over the visiting Demonettes on Thursday night.

St. Michael’s, which improved to 8-3 with the victory, has now beaten Capital, Santa Fe High and SFIS this season.

Setter Ysabella Trujillo had several of her 38 assists in Game 2, setting the table for hitters like Salome Romp (23 kills) and Adonica Baca (11).

The rest of the match was controlled largely by the Lady Horsemen. Lily Barker and Sierra Moya had 12 kills apiece while the team’s defense amassed 21 blocks against Santa Fe High’s front line.

Darian Ortiz had 23 assists for St. Michael’s while Miquela Martinez had 11 assists and 13 digs. Alyssa Pincheira Sandoval had 16 digs with five aces.

“My bigs played awesome at the net,” said St. Michael’s head coach Valerie Sandoval. “My passers were on their feet moving, allowing us to run our offense. our setters were perfect and set up Lily, Mikayla [Bohlman] and Sierra.”

Santa Fe High, which opens District 2-6A play next week against Sandia, dropped to 6-4.
