Angel Fire man indicted on charges of aggravated indecent exposure
A Santa Fe County grand jury has indicted an Angel Fire man on charges of aggravated indecent exposure and aggravated battery after he allegedly exposed his genitals to adults and children at Santa Fe’s downtown skate park and got into a fistfight with a father who objected to the behavior.
According to a Santa Fe Police Department report, Shannon McCarty was slurring his speech and stank of liquor on a Sunday evening in early August as he unzipped his pants at the skateboard facility in De Vargas Park, apparently intending to urinate.
Dominic Archuleta told police that he when he noticed what McCarty was doing, he said, “Hey man, there is a portable toilet over there,” and in response, McCarty “swung” at him. He dodged the punch, Archuleta told officers, but then McCarty began to choke him with both hands.
He pushed McCarty away because he didn’t want to fight with him, Archuleta said, according to the report, and then McCarty “pulled his penis out and began exposing himself to him and all the other individuals at the park including two female juveniles that were standing next to him.”
Archuleta became upset by McCarty’s behavior around the kids, the report said, and McCarty grabbed his shirt and tore it.
That’s when the incident escalated, the report said. Archuleta said, “McCarty began to throw punches so he grabbed Mr. McCarty and threw him to the ground and began punching him until Mr. McCarty stopped fighting.”
After the fight, the report said, McCarty walked across the street and stood there while another parent called police. McCarty was arrested and spent the night in jail. He was released the next day.
According to online jail records, McCarty has been booked into the Santa Fe County jail seven times since 2013, mostly for alcohol-related offenses, including drinking in public and disorderly conduct. In May, a few months before the incident at the skate park, he was booked on charges that included extreme cruelty to animals, assault and attempting to disarm and officer. Those charges are pending in state District Court in Santa Fe.
