It’s a new day ‘Today’ for Megyn Kelly at NBC

- BY JAY BOBBIN

As famous as she is for what she’s done before, it’s all about today for Megyn Kelly now.

The former Fox News Channel personality solidifies her move to NBC News – which began with the summer run of her “Sunday Night” newsmagazine – as her weekday morning hour “Megyn Kelly Today” premieres Monday, Sept. 25. Though it will be a bridge of sorts between the parent “Today” program (still anchored by Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie) and the final hour handled by Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford, it will have its own personality, guaranteed by having Kelly at its helm.

Having spent part of her summer visiting NBC stations around the country, she says she was “surprised at how much it felt like family to me. Other than (Chicago’s) WMAQ, where I have a bit of history, I had never set foot inside these affiliates before and didn’t know what to expect. They were incredibly warm, incredibly open-minded, and excited about the show. And, best of all for me, inquisitive about how they could help.”

Responding that she welcomes their story ideas, Kelly also anticipates being helped by the New York studio audience she’ll have. She expects that to be a more pure form of feedback than the bountiful analysis she’s gotten in the media, where she reasons, “Neither the hate nor the love tends to be real.”

Even with “Sunday Night” expected to return in the spring, “Megyn Kelly Today” will be the thrust of its host’s NBC workload, if only for the amount of time it will occupy in the network weekly.

“It’s not that challenging,” the “Settle for More” author asserts of readjusting to a daytime television role (which she actually had at Fox News earlier, as an anchor of “America’s Newsroom” and “America Live”). “I am me. I am the me that I was on ‘The Kelly File,’ and I am the me that I will be on this show. And neither required anything other than authenticity from me.”
