From The Santa Fe New Mexican: Sept. 28, 1917: The first demand upon the hospitality of the homes of Santa Fe is made by members of the New Mexico Educational Association, 1,800 of whom are expected to come here in November, in response to a cordial invitation by the people of Santa Fe a year ago. This convention by reason of the size and monetary value, and by reason of the supreme importance in the welfare of the state of its deliberations, is by far the most important gathering of the year in Santa Fe or New Mexico. It means money in the coffers of Santa Fe merchants, more than is brought here by any other organization or convention, but entirely aside from that, Santa Fe has pledged her hospitality to these educators. …
Sept. 28, 1967: RIVER PARK AMPHITHEATER — Part of a plan presented by two local architects to the city council Wednesday night would have this 600-seat amphitheater at the west end of the Santa Fe River Park Extension.
The 60-foot-diameter circle in the center, backed by several layers of stages, would be equipped with a sprinkling system for kids to run through in the summer. Other possibilities: dancing, band concerts, political rallies, ice skating.
Sept. 28, 1992: LAS VEGAS, N.M. — In the past, clear water ran in the Gallinas River most of the year. Now, for the first two miles below the dam at Montezuma Skating Club pond, sediment appears — a dark brown, slimy goo. The river smells of decomposing organic matter and at some locations, it’s cloudy. A group of Montezuma residents say they are worried about uncontrolled pollution int he river that runs through their small community five miles north of Las Vegas.
