From The Santa Fe New Mexican: Sept. 29, 1917: Miss Hazel McCleary, niece of Mr. and Mrs. E.J. DeArcy, has accepted an appointmen­t to teach int he Santa Fe schools Miss McCleary will have one of the primary grades.

… Henry O. Slaughter left today for Chicago to enter Chicago University. He will be the first graduate of the Santa Fe high school to enter that institutio­n. … Mrs. J.P. Victory is ill at her home on Garcia street. Mrs. Fletcher Catron returned this week from Chicago, where she spent several weeks with relatives.

Sept. 29, 1967: ALBUQUERQU­E (AP) — The state adjutant of the New Mexico American Legion, Hershel Doyle of Albuquerqu­e, said Thursday the state department supports Chama Legion officials in their refusal to permit the use of their Legion hall for a land grant associatio­n rally Sunday.

Asst. Dist. Atty. Monroe Fox of Chama, a Legion member, said Wednesday the hall would be padlocked to prevent land grant leader Reies Tijerina and his group from holding a fundraisin­g rally at the hall.

Sept. 29, 1992: A Santa Fe High School student was struck by a car Friday while crossing Siringo Road near the campus, the second serious accident this year involving student pedestrian­s at the busy intersecti­on of Siringo Road and Llano Street.

Parents of the two victims and school officials say they want to see something done to make the crosswalk safer for students. Some have suggested building a pedestrian bridge.
