A small earthquake early Friday morning was the talk of the town in Mora.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred around 5:35 a.m. It was a minor quake, logging in at 3.2 on the Richter scale, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, which reported the seismic activity was centered about 7.5 miles south-southwest of the village of Mora.

Mora County Sheriff Greg Laumbach said there were no reports of damage or injuries. He said he was unaware of the earthquake until he came into work and an undersheriff told him news media had been inquiring about it.

Yolanda Medina, manager of Mora County’s DWI Program, said she had just sat down to drink her first cup of coffee Friday morning at her home in Rainsville when she felt the ground move under her feet for about 20 seconds.

“My husband was in the bathroom. He was washing up,” Medina said. “He said he didn’t feel anything.”

He told Medina that the quake was just her “imagination.”

Frances Muniz, another Mora County employee, said she woke up and thought a gust of wind had shaken her mobile home in Rainsville. But Muniz thought it must have been more than wind.

The earthquake was nothing like one Muniz said she experienced when she was living in California, where she saw the ground roll.

The early morning temblor on Friday did not even rouse many people in Mora County out of their beds.

“If you were up, it got your attention,” Muniz said. “My folks slept right through it.”
