A letter to Trump: Building a wall

Dear Mr. Trump, Prominent in the media is your desire to build a wall on our southern border. I am fascinated by the prospect and have researched walls in other countries.

The wall of China is only one of the many that exist. Did you know that Denmark had an earthen wall built around A.D. 500 that archaeologists now think was part of a canal and river system connecting the Baltic and North Seas? Wouldn’t it be great to have a canal along our southern border connecting the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean? Exciting, huh? Think what it would do for trade.

Now, about the wall itself. I am worried that if you stop at the Texas and California coastlines, nothing will inhibit a person from swimming around its end and walking up the beach on our side. Is it your plan to extend the wall beyond the U.S. Coast Guard’s patrol area?

Another concern is the growth of twoto three-person submarines. What will stop some entrepreneur from starting an underwater taxi service and ferrying nondocumented immigrants under the wall to our shores? Now that I think about it, what will stop people from using any boat to go around the fence? You will need to extend the wall to the floor of the two bodies of water.

Personal jet packs and the prospect of people-sized drones have the potential to create all kinds of immigration problems down the road. I suggest you talk to yourself to figure out solutions.

One final thought. Since the Brexit vote, some Texans are again talking about seceding from the United States. This may change your plans about where and how the wall is built. Definitely, it will let Mexico off the hook for a portion. I wonder if Texans will be willing to pay for the portions between them and New Mexico, Oklahoma and Louisiana. After all, they will want to keep foreigners out.

Hope my comments are helpful.
