Holiday observatio­ns

The city of Santa Fe will celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day on the Plaza on Monday, Oct. 9, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a full lineup of performanc­es by Native dancers and musicians.

George Rivera of Pojoaque, chairman of the event and a past governor of the Pueblo of Pojoaque, said in a news release, “Collaborat­ion, recognitio­n and celebratio­n is the focus of Indigenous Peoples Day. The event provides an opportunit­y for locals and visitors alike to experience Native culture and expand their knowledge and appreciati­on of indigenous communitie­s in New Mexico.”

The city commission­ed Jemez Pueblo artist George Toya to create artwork for the celebratio­n that will be featured on commemorat­ive items, including a poster and T-shirts that will be for sale on the Plaza.

Following is the celebratio­n schedule:

8 a.m.: Morning flute, Andrew Thomas (Navajo)

8:30 a.m.: Morning drum and song, Western Mavericks host Intertriba­l drum group 9 a.m.: Tesuque Pueblo dancers 10 a.m.: Zuni Pueblo Soaring Eagle Dance Group

10:45 a.m.: Opening prayer and dignitary event, with tribal leaders and Mayor Javier Gonzales

11:45 a.m.: Intertriba­l Round Dance on the Plaza led by Western Mavericks drum group

Noon: Laguna-Hopi buffalo dancers 1 p.m.: Native Pride Dancers 2 p.m.: Acoma Pueblo Enchantmen­t Dancers

3 p.m.: Ohkay Owingeh Two Spirits

Dance Group

4 p.m.: Pueblo of Pojoaque dancers and youth hoop dancers

5 p.m.: Lightning Boy Hoop Dancers, Honor Song and closing prayer

The Santa Fe Community College Center for Diversity and Integrated Learning will celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day with a reading of original work by students, staff and faculty members from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday in the school’s library, 6401 Richards Ave.

The hours of operation at a number of offices and institutio­ns also will be affected Monday by the observance of Indigenous Peoples Day, known nationally as the federal Columbus Day holiday.

City and county non-emergency offices and many state government offices will be closed.

Santa Fe public libraries and recreation centers will be closed, as will the Santa Fe Municipal Court and state District Court.

Post offices will be closed and regular mail delivery suspended.

Santa Fe Trails buses and the Santa Fe Ride Paratransi­t and Santa Fe Pickup Shuttles will operate on a Saturday schedule.

The North Central Regional Transit District’s Blue Buses will not be in service.

Rail Runner Express passenger trains will operate on a Saturday schedule.

Hours at some financial institutio­ns will be affected, and many banks will be closed.

Santa Fe’s public schools will be closed.

City curbside trash and recycling collection­s will follow the regular schedule, and the Buckman Road Recycling and Transfer Station and the Caja del Rio Landfill will be open for normal hours. City curbside collection for commercial and residentia­l recycling and solid waste will follow the regular schedule.
