The past 100 years
From The Santa Fe New Mexican:
Oct. 17, 1917: A rousing liberty loan meeting will be held this evening at the court house, at which a general committee will be named to carry on next week’s campaign to sell Santa Fe’s quota of the new loan.
Representatives of all the fraternal and commercial organizations in the city will be on hand, but Judge Holloman desires that the general public show its interest by attending and taking part in the discussions.
Santa Fe is preparing to make showing during next week’s campaign that will again open the eyes of the state.
Oct. 17, 1967: Gov. David F. Cargo’s Republicans have handed the Democrats a readymade 1968 campaign issue on the state employee group insurance contract.
Cargo awarded the contract, effective Nov. 1, to Aetna Life and Casualty. Jim Black of Albuquerque is the firm’s New Mexico group insurance manager.
Black is salaried and says he will receive no commission from the contract. He is Bernalillo County Republican finance chairman.
Oct. 17, 1992: The stretch of Paseo de Peralta where two elderly pedestrians have been killed in recent months — including one this week — is not a major site for traffic accidents, Santa Fe’s ranking traffic officer said Friday.
“Any time someone steps out in front of oncoming traffic, there is nothing we can do about it,” said police Lt. Charles Dalton.
