Santa Fe New Mexican

Did you catch George R.R. Martin leaping into the film industry fray last week? The author hosted U.S. Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham at his Jean Cocteau Cinema for a panel on the future of the movie business in the state.

Martin, like the other panelists, called for cap relief: The annual limit on rebate payouts to productions is stunting New Mexico’s film business, he said. He was echoed by Lujan Grisham, a Democrat running for governor, who said she’d make film a priority in her administration if she were elected.

El Mitotero, star-obsessed, fun-loving little goblin that he is, will say this: Anything that brings more movies to New Mexico and therefore more movie stars within El Mitotero’s peripheral vision is a very, very good thing.

Graves premieres tonight on EPIX. The return of the Santa Fe area-filmed political drama is covered elsewhere in these pages today — but allow El Mitotero one editorial comment: Nick Nolte is a national treasure, and even if you don’t think you’ll like Graves you oughtta give it a shot for the pure, uncut rush of late-stage Nolte. The man has aged like a peat-smoked whiskey: Rough and tough and delicious. Big fan of the Nolte, El Mitotero is. May he live a thousand years!

Ethan Hawke, in town to film The Kid with Vincent D’Onofrio and Dane DeHaan, will appear at a screening of his film Maudie at the Center for Contemporary Arts tonight. El Mitotero understands the showing is sold out, which is tragic, but if you stand outside with a neon-glowing sign that reads ETHAN HAWKE YOU’RE GREAT, hey, who knows, you might make a friend. (That friend is El Mitotero.)
