The past 100 years
From The Santa Fe New Mexican:
Oct. 27, 1917: That the second Liberty Loan subscriptions through the Santa Fe banks would total $700,000 by night, was estimated this afternoon by President Levi A. Hughes of the First National bank.
Oct. 27, 1967: Editors Note: New Mexico voters will see an old favorite — absentee voting — on the Nov. 7 special election when they consider eight proposed constitutional amendments. The past 10 times absentee voting has been on the ballot, voters have given it an overwhelming majority. But it requires an extraordinary majority within the counties, not just a statewide majority. Absentee voting and three other proposed amendments are discussed in this article.
Oct. 27, 1992: The hollyhocks will look a little paler next spring. Tommy Macaione won’t be there to paint them.
Macaione, whose 85th birthday would have fallen on Nov. 13, died Monday. He was accompanied in death by a thick slice of the bohemian side of Santa Fe’s art world.
“He was always been to me the old and real Santa Fe that I love,” said Dick McCord, a neighbor of Macaione’s. “And his passing is just another sign of the town changing and some really important things passing here.”
Macaione was found collapsed in his apartment on Galisteo Street by a delivery person from Fraser Pharmacy.
