Six candidates for an open mayor’s seat and nine hopefuls across four City Council races submitted their nominating petitions Monday to the city clerk, who within 10 days will verify which candidates collected enough signatures to appear on the ballot March 6.

Two-term Councilor Peter Ives, first-term Councilor Joseph Maestas, school board member Kate Noble, threeterm Councilor Ron Trujillo, community member Harvey Van Sickle and entrepreneur Alan Webber submitted mayoral petitions to the clerk Monday.

To qualify for the ballot, mayoral candidates must have collected signatures from at least one half of 1 percent of the registered voters citywide; council candidates must have collected from at least one half of 1 percent of the registered voters in their respective districts.

For 2018 mayoral candidates, the minimum was 267 signatures.

Social worker Wesley Sandel, another announced candidate for mayor, did not submit a petition, City Clerk Yolanda Vigil said.

In north-side council District 1, where 86 signatures were needed, incumbent Councilor Signe Lindell submitted a petition, as did repeat council candidate and artist Marie Campos.

In southeast side District 2, which will be an open seat as Maestas runs for mayor rather than re-election, three candidates submitted petitions: businessman Joe Arellano businessman Nate Downey and lawyer Carol Romero-Wirth. Seventy-six signatures were needed.

In southwest-side District 3, only Roman “Tiger” Abeyta, a former Santa Fe County manager, submitted a petition. Thirty-seven signatures were needed.

And in south-central District 4, three candidates submitted petitions seeking to succeed mayoral candidate Trujillo: veterans’ advocate Greg Scargall; businesswoman JoAnne Vigil Coppler; and businessman Eric J. Wilson. Sixty-eight signatures were needed.

Candidates who hope to qualify for public financing can collect qualifying contributions until Nov. 20. Mayoral candidates must collect $5 donations from 600 registered voters; council candidates must collect $5 donations from 150 registered voters.
