Police searching for suspect in ‘horrific’ dog death

- By Justin Horwath

Santa Fe police said in a news release Saturday evening that they are searching for someone who threw a dog out of a moving car in a “horrific” incident that resulted in the 3-year-old miniature pincher’s death.

Emergency dispatchers were heard over the radio saying the dog was thrown out of a Nissan at around 7 p.m. Thursday. Police describe the vehicle as a pearl white 4-door car traveling in the westbound lane.

An animal control officer later arrived at the caller’s home, according to the release, “where the witness was holding the deceased dog, later identified as “Miklo.”

“She quickly stopped her vehicle to help the dog,” the news release says of the caller. “Miklo was still alive, but died a few minutes later while in her vehicle.”

Police described Miklo as an unneutered male, 5 pounds and tan in color.

“He had cleanly docked ears and a docked tail and did not have a collar or tags for identification,” the release said.

Miklo had a “broken back, crushed pelvis and fluid in his lungs after being thrown from the car which resulted in his death,” the release said.

Police said they identified Miklo’s owners, who reported the dog missing at the Santa Fe animal shelter on Friday. The dog had slipped out of his collar and ran away while on a walk, according to police, and the owners were unable to find him after searching that night.

Anyone with information about who threw Miklo out of the Nissan is encouraged to call Santa Fe Police Department at 505-955-2707. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous can also call Santa Fe Crime Stoppers at 505-955-5050. The nonprofit Santa Fe Crime Stoppers will offer a reward for information leading to an arrest.
