Santa Fe New Mexican

Giving thanks for our neighbors

-

What a blessing to live in a city and region where neighbors lend a helping hand, not just during the holidays but all year long. Northern New Mexico is populated with people who won’t back down from a challenge and who work hard to improve the world around them. To recognize these helpers, The New Mexican has been writing about people who make a difference for more than three decades. Each year, the newspaper names “10 Who Made a Difference” and offers their stories. It’s a bit of inspiration — perhaps after reading, we can all be moved to do more good in the world around us.

This year’s honorees bring incredible gifts to our community, helping in myriad ways. Many have done so for decades. Nominations to be included in “10 Who Made a Difference” are made by members of the community, with this year’s suggestions full of worthy candidates. Beginning today, we will be profiling our honorees, starting with Glenys Carl, who runs a nonprofit that provides free, in-home care to people in need.

Other difference-makers this year assist veterans, help people find sobriety or provide legal services for immigrants. One volunteer helped create a community library; another battles on behalf of foster children. Our honorees work with young people, help victims of domestic violence, reach out to the disabled and bring community theater alive.

The needs are many, but so are the willing hearts and hands available to help. This Thanksgiving, as we gather with friends and family to count our blessings, let us remember the people who make a difference. Northern New Mexico and Santa Fe are enriched by their presence.
