Santa Fe New Mexican

The past 100 years

-

From The Santa Fe New Mexican: Nov. 24, 1917: Lolita Chaves, the beautiful 14-year-old daughter of former Probate Judge Apolino Chaves, of Galisteo, was shot in the right side by Andres Mora, aged 20 years, also of Galisteo, yesterday morning while on her way to school. Mora then turned the pistol on himself. He died in jail here at 11 o’clock last night and Miss Chaves succumbed to the bullet wound at the sanitarium here a few minutes before midnight.

Mora appeared insanely jealous of the girl. Miss Chaves declared before she died that she had never had any affection for Mora and had never given him any cause to become jealous. She had perhaps seen him and danced with him a dozen times at “bailes.” The double tragedy took place at 8 a.m. yesterday. Miss Chaves was about to cross the big bridge that spans the Galisteo river, and was on her way to school with several youngsters. Mora stood at the bridge awaiting his victim. As she approached, and saw him, she did not run or cry out. This is regarded as proof that she was not aware that Mora was in a jealous rage.

Nov. 24, 1967: The number of deaths on the nation’s highways mounted today as many Americans celebrated the long holiday period after a traditional thanksgiving dinner with relatives. But the early death toll lagged behind last year’s pace that led to 743 traffic fatalities for the 102-hour Thanksgiving period, a record for any holiday.

Nov. 24, 1992: The Museum of New Mexico has raised its admission prices to increase attendance. While the move might go against the theory that lower prices mean more sales, a survey commissioned by the Museum of New Mexico Foundation showed that visitors would be willing to pay more for their arts experience. As of Monday, the four state museums began charging $5 for a three-day pass, museum director Tom Livesay said Monday. The new fee replaces the $3.50 admission charged for a one-day pass to a single museum.

It is, however, a dollar cheaper than the $5 fee charged for two-day passes to the museums.
