No. 1 Duke rallies to beat Texas, 85-78

PORTLAND, Ore. — Freshman Marvin Bagley III had a career-high 34 points and added 15 rebounds, and No. 1 Duke rallied to defeat Texas 85-78 in overtime on Friday in the semifinals of the PK80 Invitation­al.

Gary Trent Jr. added 17 points for the Blue Devils (7-0), who trailed by 16 points in the second half and were forced to play five freshmen once senior Grayson Allen fouled out.

Dylan Osetkowski had 19 points and seven rebounds for Texas (4-1), which fell short of its first-ever victory over a top-ranked team.

Bagley tied the Blue Devils’ freshman scoring record set by J.J. Reddick on Jan. 15, 2003, against Virginia.

NO. 18 PURDUE 89, NO. 2 ARIZONA 64

In Paradise Island, Bahamas, Dakota Mathias scored 24 points to help Purdue in the seventhpla­ce game at the Battle 4 Atlantis, sending Arizona home with three losses in three days.

The Boilermake­rs (5-2) had struggled with their shooting through two tournament losses of their own, but shot 57 percent and made 11 of 22 3-point attempts in a break-loose performanc­e.

Carsen Edwards added 22 points for Boilermake­rs.

Freshman Deandre Ayton had 22 points before fouling out for the Wildcats (3-3), while junior Allonzo Trier — who came in averaging 27.8 points — finished with just eight on 3-for10 shooting.

NO. 3 KANSAS 102, OAKLAND 59

In Lawrence, Kan., Udoka Azubuike had a career-high 21 points and 10 rebounds and seven players finished in double figures for Kansas.

Lagerald Vick had 15 points and seven rebounds while Devonte Graham had 14 points and seven assists for the Jayhawks (5-0), who won their 24th straight non-conference home game without breaking a sweat.

Malik Newman also scored 15 points, Svi Mykhailiuk had 14 and Mitch Lightfoot had a career-best 11 points with eight rebounds. Freshman forward Marcus Garrett added 10 points.

NO. 5 VILLANOVA 64, NORTHERN IOWA 50

In Paradise Island, Bahamas, Mikal Bridges scored 18 points and Villanova pulled away in the Battle 4 Atlantis championsh­ip game.

Jalen Brunson added 16 points and was named the tournament’s most valuable player for Villanova (6-0), which led most of the way then used an 8-0 run in the final 4 minutes to turn away the Panthers.

It marked Villanova’s 17th straight win in a November tournament and marked the Wildcats’ fifth straight year with a championsh­ip, including the 2013 Atlantis title.

NO. 9 N. CAROLINA 87, ARKANSAS 68

Luke Maye had career-highs with 28 points and 16 rebounds and Kenny Williams had 16 of his 19 points in the second half for North Carolina in the semifinals of the PK80 Invitation­al.

The Tar Heels (5-0) were smothering on the defensive end, holding the Razorbacks under 80 points for the first time this season. The Razorbacks shot just 32 percent in the first half and were dominated on the boards getting outrebound­ed 46-30.

Maye made 11 of 16 shots and 11 of his rebounds came at the defensive end.

NO. 14 MINNESOTA 69, MASSACHUSE­TTS 51

In New York, Jordan Murphy scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to spark Minnesota in the Barclays Center Classic.

Amir Coffey added nine points for the Golden Gophers (6-0). Luwane Pipkins led the Minutemen (3-2) with 18.

The Golden Gophers never trailed in winning their sixth straight game.

ARIZONA ST. 102, NO. 15 XAVIER 86

In Las Vegas, Nev., Tra Holder scored a career-high 40 points to lead Arizona State in the championsh­ip game of the Las Vegas Invitation­al.

Holder scored 23 of his 40 points in the second half for Arizona State (6-0), which shot 55.9 percent from the field. The 6-foot-1 senior guard finished 14-of-22 shooting from the field, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range, and added four rebounds and four assists. He was named the tournament’s MVP.

NO. 16 TEXAS A&M 81, PEPPERDINE 65

In College Station, Texas, DJ Hogg scored 18 points and Tyler Davis had seven of his 15 in a key second-half stretch to lead Texas A&M.

Kameron Edwards scored 20 points to lead the Waves (2-4), who trimmed their deficit to six twice in the second half, the final time with 7:31 remaining. However, after Amadi Udenyi’s layup cut the Aggies’ lead to 60-54, Pepperdine went 5:35 without a basket and A&M (5-0) pulled away.

NO. 19 LOUISVILLE 84, SAINT FRANCIS (PA.) 72

In Louisville, Ky., Ray Spalding had 19 points and a career-high 13 rebounds before leaving midway through the second half with an injury for Louisville held off Saint Francis 84-72 on Friday night.

Spalding’s layup provided a 66-44 lead with 12:38 remaining, but the junior forward went to the locker room several minutes later with what appeared to be an ankle injury. Saint Francis took advantage of his absence with a 23-10 run over 8:09 to get within 74-66, but Jordan Nwora and Deng Adel each answered with five points while Anas Mahmoud made consecutiv­e blocks during one sequence to help the Cardinals (4-0) pull away.

Keith Braxton had 25 points and 11 rebounds for the Red Flash (2-3).

NO. 20 SETON HALL 72, VANDERBILT 59

In New York, Desi Rodriguez scored a seasonhigh 27 points for Seton Hall in the consolatio­n game of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Barclays Center.

Rodriguez made 12 of 21 shots and keyed an offense, which shot 46.6 percent overall.

Angel Delgado added 15 points and eight rebounds as Seton Hall (5-1) dominated after halftime by outscoring Vanderbilt 41-27.

Jeff Roberson had 20 points and 13 rebounds for his fourth double-double for Vanderbilt (2-4).

WASHINGTON ST. 84, NO. 21 SAINT MARY’S 79

In Fullerton, Calif., Malachi Flynn scored 26 points and Washington State held off Saint Mary’s to reach the title game of the Wooden Legacy.

The Cougars put the Gaels (5-1) in a 16-point hole, and then stayed cool when Saint Mary’s got within three on a 3-pointer by Jordan Ford with 47 seconds left.

Robert Franks and Jeff Pollard made layups to preserve the win for the Cougars (5-0), who shot 62 percent in the second half.

NO. 23 WEST VIRGINIA 83, UCF 45

In Lake Buena Vista, Fla., James Bolden scored 17 points and Jevon Carter had 16 for West Virginia in a semifinal at the Advocare Invitation­al.

The Mountainee­rs (5-1) used stellar defense to take a 43-20 lead at halftime. West Virginia held UCF to 19 percent shooting (4 for 21) and scored 17 points off the Knights’ 17 turnovers.

Seven-foot-6 center Tacko Fall had 11 points and eight rebounds for Central Florida (4-1).

NO. 25 ALABAMA 71, BYU 59

In New York, John Petty scored 16 points to lead Alabama in the Barclays Center Classic.

Dazon Ingram added 15 points for Alabama (5-0). off to its best start since 2012-13, when they began 6-0.

Yoeli Childs had 21 points for BYU (3-2), which lost for the second time in three games.
