SmartBoard SUPERINTENDENT GIVES STATE OF THE SCHOOLS ADDRESS

Superintendent Veronica García gives the district’s annual State of the Schools’ address at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 30, at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center on Marcy Street. The event is free and open to the public and includes musical performances by some school groups, including the Academy for Technology and the Classics’ African marimba ensemble, Capital High School’s Jaguar Band and Santa Fe High School’s advanced mix choir.
The College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Northern New Mexico College in Española has received a $112,506 Rapid Workforce Development grant to provide accelerated Certified Nurse Aide training to 48 New Mexico students. The Northern program was the only one of seven applicants from the state to receive the grant, which will go toward furnishing a lab dedicated to the Nurse Aide training program, providing scholarships to eligible students and covering the expenses of additional training staff. The College of Nursing and Health Sciences provides students and nursing professionals with an array of degree options.
Students from a number of public schools will perform in the seventh annual holiday stroll at the DeVargas Center, located at the intersection of Guadalupe Street and Paseo de Peralta, from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, and Saturday, Dec. 2. The event is free. Pecos High School English teacher Marybeth Britton has been nominated for the 2017-18 national LifeChanger of the Year award, sponsored by the National Life Group Foundation. The award honors the best K-12 educators across the nation who make a difference in the lives of students by exemplifying excellence, a positive attitude and leadership skills.
Britton has worked for the Pecos school district for 23 years. She was named New Mexico Teacher of the Year in 2012.
Each year, LifeChanger of the Year receives hundreds of nominations from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Seventeen LifeChange of the Year awards will be given out during the 2017-18 school year. Winners are chosen by a selection committee made up of former winners and education professionals. Nominees must be K-12 teachers or school district employees.

Students from the Santa Fe University of Art and Design put together an exhibition of art work by Taos photographer J. Madison Rink called Beyond Boundaries. The show includes naturemade portraits from the American Southwest. The students developed the show as part of their Fundamentals of Marketing Class. The show opens with a reception from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m Friday, Dec. 1, at Night Sky Gallery, 826 Canyon Road. It runs through the end of December.
Monte Del Sol Charter School, which serves students in grades 7-12, will host a garage sale to raise money for a school trip to Japan. The event takes place from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 2 at the school campus at 4157 Walking Rain Road. The event includes a bake sale, a raffle and lots of swag.
