Woman mired in misfortunes

-

A Santa Fe area woman says she has had a series of misfortunes.

Her son died on Mother’s Day and she had to pay funeral costs that included bringing him home from Denver.

Then after having surgery on her left foot, she fell off her crutches and injured the rotator cuff in her shoulder.

While dealing with the pain of losing her son she decided to leave her alcoholic husband, walking out with only her clothes.

She now rents a one-room house for $630 a month but has no transportation of her own, relying on the bus system from time to time despite swelling in her foot. She found an old, high-mileage car for sale but hasn’t been able to save enough to cover the price.

She is among hundreds of people seeking help this season through the Empty Stocking Fund.

The Empty Stocking Fund is a project of The Santa Fe New Mexican. The Santa Fe Community Foundation, Los Alamos National Bank, The Salvation Army, Presbyterian Medical Services, The Life Link and Linda Zingle donate services to jointly administer the Empty Stocking Fund.

The newspaper will run stories featuring requests for assistance from local residents. The information from the initial application will be verified if the applicant is selected for assistance.
