Education standouts
Alfredo Celedon Lujan, a teacher at Monte del Sol Charter School in Santa Fe, recently received the 2017 Advancement of People of Color Leadership Award from the National Council of Teachers of English, a nationwide nonprofit advocacy and support organization devoted to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts.
Lujan also was nominated to be vice president of the National Council of Teachers of English, which is a four-year position.
U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján, D-N.M., announced that he has nominated 29 students from Northern New Mexico to enter the U.S. Service Academies as part of the freshman class of 2018.

Luján’s 2017 Service Academy nominees include these area students: U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.: From Santa Fe: Micah Bibb, School Without Borders High School, Washington, D.C.
From Los Alamos: Annika Davenport, home schooled.
From Española: Laureen Naranjo, St. Michael’s High School. U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md.: From Los Alamos: Jacob Thompson and Neil Wilkerson, both from Los Alamos High School.
Interviews took place throughout the 3rd Congressional District in early November.
Luján’s Service Academy Selection Board considered all the applications from the young New Mexicans interested in attending the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy or the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
The academies will make the final decision about who will receive an appointment of admission in early 2018. Those selected will enter the academies in June.
