Santa Fe New Mexican

The past week was not kind to downtown nightlife patrons. Skylight, San Francisco Street’s foremost purveyor of strobe light, will close months after the property owner told The New

Mexican the nightclub owners hadn’t paid rent in “some time.” Skylight had scaled back hours and tried to keep things afloat with previously scheduled events, but it’s done for good now. Also, the Underground at Evangelo’s closed. The basement venue is expected to reopen in a few weeks, the owner told the Santa Fe Reporter. But, in the meantime, if you plan on a night out downtown, get to Crowbar early and take your claustrophobia medication and keep your elbows wide. It’s gonna be crowded.

There’s a new Santa Fe-filmed movie out: Just Getting Started with Morgan Freeman, Tommy

Lee Jones and Rene Russo. It filmed under the name Villa Capri last year. Set at a luxury Palm Springs, Calif., resort, Freeman and Jones are a pair of wacky, spry seniors at odds over Russo’s affections. (The resort is the Four Seasons.) But Freeman’s character, in witness protection, needs help from Jones, a former FBI agent, when the past rears its head. The trailer looks all right! It’s showing at Violet Crown and Regal.

In other filmed-in-Santa Fe news, El Mitotero finished the Netflix Western miniseries Godless last week and has only extremely positive things to say. Book Jeff Daniels, Jack O’Connell and

Michelle Dockery for Emmy nominations. The Lamy scenery is, of course, tremendous. Give it a watch. Or a binge! Live your life.

If you’re still waiting to dive into last Wednesday’s New York Times crossword, avert your eyes from the following clue spoiler. 53-Across (“Mountainous state: Abrr.”) was NMEX. Now, El Mitotero is an avid crossword puzzler, and “NMEX” comes up every so often. It’ll come up again. But El Mitotero would like to put his foot down here and say: It is a bad crossword answer. Crossword answers typically reflect common usage. “NMEX” is obscure as hell. It is apparently “Chicago-style.” Well, this is an AP style household, and El Mitotero isn’t having it. Isn’t having it, Mr. Will Shortz!
