From The Santa Fe New Mexican:

Dec. 13, 1917: Following the reports received from the trenches in France that the men about to go over the top crave tobacco more than food or stimulants, there is a widespread movement in this country to send tobacco to the soldiers for Christmas.

A barrel has been placed in the Capital City Pharmacy, southeast corner of the plaza, and it awaits the gifts of any man, woman or child who wishes to send cigarettes, “the makings” or pipe tobacco to the New Mexico soldiers at Linda Vista. The tobacco will be sent to these soldiers wherever they happen to be at Christmas time — California, the border or France.

Dec. 13, 1967: Father Robert Garcia will tell a legislative committee today that much of Att. Gen. Boston Witt’s criticism of his state anti-poverty agency is misplaced or erroneous.

Garcia, director of the State Division of Economic Opportunity, is expected to tell the Legislative Finance Committee that Lt. Gov. E. Lee Francis ordered Dr. Clark Knowlton brought to New Mexico during last June’s violence in northern New Mexico. The blame for using the state plane was pinned on Garcia in Witt’s report — delivered to the LFC Monday.

Dec. 13, 1992: After weeks of immersion in the numbers of state government, Gov. Bruce King’s task force on finances is set to meet Monday to hammer out recommendations on ways to make [things more] efficient and, maybe, raise more revenue. Task force members, who have held several marathon meetings since October, say they didn’t find any huge areas of wasteful spending.
