Young ties Division I record with 22 assists in Oklahoma win
NORMAN, Okla. — Freshman Trae Young had 26 points and tied an NCAA Division I record with 22 assists as No. 17 Oklahoma rolled past Northwestern State 105-68 on Tuesday night in the Sooners’ first game since moving into the Top 25.
Brady Manek added 22 points and Kameron McGusty had 15 for Oklahoma (9-1). The Sooners have won seven straight games — including an upset of then-No. 3 Wichita State on Saturday — and have scored 90 or more points seven times this season.
Young’s 22 assists tied the major college record set by Tony Fairley of Charleston Southern vs. Armstrong in 1987 and matched by Southern’s Avery Johnson against Texas Southern in 1988 and Syracuse’s Sherman Douglas against Providence in 1989.
Young also broke the former Big 12 record of 18, set by Oklahoma’s Michael Johnson vs. North Texas in 1997, and matched by Oklahoma State’s Doug Gottlieb vs. Florida Atlantic in 1998.
NO. 3 ARIZONA ST. 95, LONGWOOD 61
In Tempe, Ariz., Tra Holder scored 20 points, Kodi Justice added 18 and Arizona State overcame a shaky first half to extend the best start in school history.
Arizona State (11-0) struggled early for the second straight game. The Sun Devils went on a 16-1 run to turn a five-point halftime lead into a 54-35 advantage in the opening 6½ minutes.
Holder finished with six assists, six steals and five rebounds.
NO. 9 XAVIER 81, MARSHALL 77
In Cincinnati, Kerem Kanter had 16 points and 13 rebounds for Xavier, which played the second half without three starters.
Xavier led by as many as 23 points but was outscored 50-34 in the second half.
Xavier didn’t have starters J.P. Macura (blurred vision) and Kaiser Gates (dizziness) the entire game as both were being held out for precautionary measures. Freshman Naji Marshall, who was moved into the starting lineup, took a hard fall near halftime and did not play the second half.
NO. 8 TEXAS A&M 64, NORTHERN KENTUCKY 58
In College Station, Texas, senior guard Duane Wilson scored 16 points and Texas A&M escaped with the win.
The short-handed Aggies (10-1), missing injured starters Admon Gilder and Robert Williams, trailed 16-15 more than midway through the first half before outscoring the Norse 12-2 over the next 4 minutes. Northern Kentucky (7-5) stayed within reach and the game was tied at 44-44 with less than 8 minutes remaining.
Drew McDonald led the Norse with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
NO. 11 WICHITA STATE 89, ARKANSAS STATE 80
In Wichita, Kan., Samajae Haynes-Jones came off the bench to score 27 points for Wichita State.
Haynes-Jones, who had scored a combined one point in his last three games, had 18 second-half points for the Shockers (9-2), whose lead was trimmed as low as four in the final 3 minutes.
Landry Shamet scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half for Wichita State.
NO. 13 VIRGINIA 77, SAVANNAH STATE 49
In Charlottesville, Va., sophomore guard Ty Jerome scored a career-high 17 points, hitting all three of his 3-point attempts, for Virginia.
Virginia (10-1) got 10 points and five rebounds from junior center Jack Salt as the Cavaliers built a 42-21 halftime lead.
John Grant had 22 points for Savannah State (3-11), which has attempted the most 3-pointers in the nation and missed its first nine shots from beyond the arc. The Tigers finished 11 for 37 on 3-pointers.
NO. 20 CINCINNATI 77, ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF 49
In Highland Heights, Ky., Cane Broome matched his season high with 17 points as Cincinnati kept Arkansas-Pine Bluff winless while extending the nation’s longest homecourt winning streak.
The Bearcats (10-2) have won 32 straight home games.
Travon Harper had 16 points for Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-13), which took another lopsided loss as part of its brutal seasonopening stretch. The Golden Lions have yet to play a home game.
NO. 21 TEXAS TECH 90, FLORIDA ATLANTIC 54
In Lubbock, Texas, Keenan Evans led six players in double figures for Texas Tech.
Davide Moretti scored 14 points, Tommy Hamilton IV had 13 and Niem Stevenson made four of six 3-point attempts for all 12 of his points as the Red Raiders (10-1) outscored the Owls 50-21 after halftime.
Justin Massey led Florida Atlantic (6-5) with 17 points.
