New Mexico fishing report

- This fishing report was provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish.

Abiquiú Lake: Fishing for walleye was slow with just a few caught by anglers using blade baits and grubs. Anglers fishing from shore and using PowerBait caught a few trout. Fishing pressure was very light.

Animas River: Trout fishing was good for anglers using salmon eggs, PowerBait and wooly worms.

Albuquerqu­e Area Drains: Fishing in the Albuquerqu­e, Belen, Bernalillo and Corrales drains was good using meal worms, Fire Balls, Berkley trout worms, San Juan worms, Gulp eggs and salmon eggs for trout.

Chama River: Fishing below El Vado was slow to fair using wooly buggers, bead-head hares’ ears, night crawlers and Fire Balls for brown and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiú was very good using crane fly larva, small midge patterns, olive and black wooly buggers, small bead-head pheasant tail nymphs, salmon eggs and PowerBait.

Heron Lake: Fishing was good using an assortment of PowerBait, corn and Fire Balls from the bank for 8 to 16-inch rainbow trout. The best reports have come from anglers fishing the shoreline from the dam to the La Laja boat ramp area. Kokanee snagging was slow. Fishing pressure was light.

Jemez Waters: Anglers fishing the Jemez below Soda Dam caught a few trout. They were using copper John Barrs, salmon eggs and custom tied nymphs.

Lake Farmington: Fishing was fair using Pistol Petes, salmon eggs, and PowerBait for trout.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using swim baits and jerk baits for northern pike. Anglers using jigs caught a few smallmouth bass and swim baits. Fishing for all other species was slow. Fishing pressure was light.

San Juan River: Fly fishing action through the Quality waters was fair for some and very good for others. Best flies reported were small midge patterns, wooly buggers, bunny leeches and red larva. Trout fishing through the bait waters was fair using salmon eggs, PowerBait and worms.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central ponds was very good using PowerBait, Zeke’s garlic trout bait, salmon eggs, mealworms and wooly worms with a red tail and Pistol Petes for trout.
