Gary Sinise has a prime spot in the Tournament of Roses Parade

-

For a Rose Parade with the theme “Making a Difference,” there’s no question Gary Sinise is an appropriate choice to be Grand Marshal.

While the Emmy-winning actor is famous for his work in television (“Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders,” “CSI: NY”), movies (“Forrest Gump,” “Apollo 13”) and theater (“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “The Grapes of Wrath”), he also has supported America’s veterans tirelessly through his Gary Sinise Foundation ... extending to building and giving houses to former soldiers with special needs, and performing concerts around the world with his Lt. Dan Band (named for his “Gump” character) for military personnel and their families.

That’s why Sinise and his wife will spend part of New Year’s Day riding through the streets of Pasadena, Calif. – in the same car James Stewart had in the 1946 movie classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” – during the 129th Tournament of Roses Parade on Monday, Jan. 1. Multiple networks including ABC, NBC, Hallmark Channel and HGTV will broadcast the event, which also will boast the usual procession of marching bands and very floral floats, plus 18 equestrian teams.

“I was kind of stunned when they called about it,” the friendly Sinise admits of being given the Grand Marshal title. “The tradition of that event is so vast, when you look at how far back it goes and how many Grand Marshals there have been and who’s done it. It’s really overwhelming.”

Former Pasadena resident Sinise’s pride in being recognized for his humanitarian efforts is evident: “In my work on behalf of our veterans and first responders and active-duty folks and Gold Star Families, I’ve been trying to make a difference by helping and supporting them in whatever ways I can ... trying to make sure that they know they’re appreciated, and that there’s a grateful nation out there that does not forget what they’re going through. That the Rose Parade can shine a spotlight on the men and women who serve our country because they’re putting a spotlight on me, that’s a very good thing.”
