From The Santa Fe New Mexican: Jan. 11, 1918: WASHINGTON — Woman suffrage was a step nearer realizatio­n today as the result of the victory in the House last night when a resolution was adopted authorizin­g submission to the states of the Susan B. Anthony amendment for national enfranchis­ement of women. The vote was 274 to 136, exactly the required two-thirds majority. Republican Leader Mann and Representa­tive Sims, both of whom came to the House from sick beds, brought the votes which settled the issue. So close was the contest that a recapitula­tion was asked and the announceme­nt of the final vote was greeted with wild applause and cheering from the women who thronged the galleries.

Jan. 11, 1968: Alto Street soon will be short four buildings. City Council last night approved a request from the Building Inspector’s office to demolish buildings at 921, 922, 927 and 933 Alto. The four structures are the last of 32 deemed substandar­d last year. The council at that time approved recommenda­tions which would either bring the structures up to accepted standards or see them demolished.

People are being permanentl­y injured at five times that rate. The personal, family and societal tragedies mount; so does the dollar cost in funeral fees, in destroyed property.
