In the prep roundup, Robertson girls find home sweet home a nice place for blowout win.

After 14 games played all across the state, the Las Vegas Robertson girls basketball team got to enjoy the spoils of home Wednesday.

The Lady Cardinals finally had their home opener, and they made it a joyous occasion with a convincing 82-44 win over Peñasco in Michael Marr Gymnasium. It was a different feeling for Robertson head coach Leroy Barela and the Lady Cardinals not having to prepare for a bus trip.

“It was a nice homecoming,” Barela said.

“It was so fun for the girls to see them huddle up by the entrance of the locker room with their run-out music on. It was very good, and it was very needed.”

It took a quarter for Robertson (12-3) to feel at home, but leave it to the coach’s daughter to break open the game. Maria Barela drained four 3-pointers on four straight trips that fueled a 29-13 scoring run in the quarter to build a 41-22 lead at the half.

Barela was happy with the Lady Cardinals’ performance in the half court set, something that was lacking because of all the travel. With a couple of days to work on that, Robertson made those adjustments pay off almost immediately.

Sophomore wing Alianza Darley had 21 points and hit a pair of 3s, while Barela also had 21. Brianna Roybal had 14 points with four 3s as well.

Senior post Angelica Montoya added 12 points, and was key to the Lady Cardinals’ offense running efficiently.

“Early on in the season, we relied on our transition offense and we did an excellent job with that,” Barela said. “Now, if that’s not available, we are comfortable with pulling the ball out and making you defend us.”

Darley also had seven steals, and Barela added a pair. Jazmyne Jenkins had 12 rebounds, while Montoya chipped in with seven.

Robertson hits the road for a 7 p.m. Thursday game, traveling to Santa Fe Indian School to play the Lady Braves.

FROM TUESDAY: PECOS 57, ABQ. COTTONWOOD CLASSICAL 23

The Lady Panthers managed fine without leading scorer Cassie Muller, who has missed the last three games with a knee injury, building a 34-13 lead at the half and holding the Lady Cougars to just 10 points the rest of the way.

Brittney Martinez led Pecos (9-3) with 20 points, while freshman Trinity Herrera grabbed 12 rebounds.

The Lady Panthers, winners of eight of their last nine games, play Monte del Sol in Christian Life Academy at 6 p.m. Thursday.

The Lady Dragons broke through for their first win of the season, thanks to 16 points from Alejandra Castillo and 14 more from Victoria Alarcon in Christian Life Academy.

It wasn’t easy, though, as Desert Academy (1-8) rallied from a 24-11 halftime deficit by outscoring the Lady Dragons 12-1 in the third quarter to get within 25-23 heading into the fourth quarter. Monte del Sol (1-8) controlled the fourth, using a 12-6 scoring run to finish off the win.

Martine Perez led the Lady Wildcats with 12 points.
