The past 100 years
From The Santa Fe New Mexican: Jan. 19, 1908: East Las Vegas, N.M. — Five alleged horse thieves are in the county jail here awaiting a hearing. The men are Jose Ignacio Roybal, Hilario Valdez, Benjamin Roybal, Luis Torres and Domingo Torres.
Jan. 19, 1968: Backers of the proposed State Police Headquarters and Training complex in Santa Fe pushed past a major obstacle yesterday — the Senate Finance Committee. The bill was opposed only by committee Chairman Harold Runnels, D-Lee County. The project’s chief sponsor, Sen. Edmundo Delgado, D-Santa Fe, is hopeful of success this year.
“I think things look pretty good in the Senate,” he said. “In the House Bruce King is managing the bill and that will help quite a bit there.”
Jan. 19, 1993: In a last-minute change to proposed ethics legislation, a task force recommended Monday that candidates be barred from using money raised for congressional campaigns to seek state office in New Mexico.
The amendment was suggested by Jamie Koch, who is state Game Commission chairman and apolitical fund-raiser for Gov. Bruce King. But Koch wouldn’t acknowledge that the restriction was aimed at King’s potential rivals — such as U.S. Rep. Bill Richardson of Santa Fe.
Richardson has accumulated a substantial war chest of unspent campaign money — probably something more than $400,000 — from his congressional races and is considered a possible challenger to King in the 1994 gubernatorial race. If Koch’s measure becomes law, Richardson couldn’t use the $400,000 to run for governor.
