A roundup of Friday’s other prep basketball games.

Friday night was supposed be a big night for the Santa Fe Indian School girls basketball team.

The schedule was a District 5-4A game at East Mountain in Sandia Park, and an appearance on KOB-TV’s GameDay prep sports segment later that night. Unfortunately, plans changed rapidly.

The junior varsity game was cancelled, and that pushed the varsity contest up from its 6:30 p.m. start to 5:15 p.m. The early start meant the Lady Braves missed out on some action footage of the game, but it didn’t change the outcome. An early start didn’t affect the Lady Braves’ play on the court, however, and they rolled to a 70-13 win to improve to 2-0 in district play.

SFIS (14-4 overall, 2-0 in 5-4A) saw the return of twin sisters Leanna and Camila Lewis, who missed the past three games because of a death in the family, and they didn’t seem to miss a beat. Leanna Lewis tied Iris Emery for the team-high in scoring the with 18 points, and Franki Chavez added 13.

The lead was 17-3 after a quarter for SFIS, and it grew to 42-12 at the half. East Mountain fell to 3-14, 0-1.

“The girls played well,” Lady Braves head coach Christie Abeyta said. “We are starting to come together.”

While the Lewises return, junior guard Hunter Garcia was absent because of tribal obligations. It continued a trend of the team missing a key player in the SFIS rotation, but it has allowed Abeyta to give some of her younger players invaluable experience.

“I’m not sure when I will have my full team back, but I’m excited when we do because they are looking good,” Abeyta said.
