A roundup of Tuesday’s other prep basketball

Santa Fe High didn’t have a play for this type of a end game situation, so the Demons winged it. Improvisation worked when Victor Salcido drained a 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds on the clock and the Demons completed a 60-58 comeback win over Clovis in Rock Staubus Gymnasium in District 2-6A boys basketball Tuesday night. The shot completed a Santa Fe High (10-9 overall) rally from a 19-point deficit in the third quarter and lifted it to 2-1 in district play.

The Wildcats led 58-57 with 16 seconds left when the Demons forced a turnover to set them up for the final shot. Christian Kavanaugh tried to win it with a driving layup but missed. However, he forced a jump-ball situation with 0.4 seconds on the clock. The Demons had no timeout, but Clovis head coach Scott Robinson gave them an out by calling one himself.

The break gave Demons head coach Zack Cole a chance to create a play.

“We’ve never ran that play in our life,” Cole said.

It also allowed Cole to talk to the officials about the rule on shooting with less than a second left. If the clock read 0.3 seconds, Santa Fe High could only try to tip the ball in. One-tenth of a second made all the difference. Salcido caught the ball on the right wing, shot and drilled it in.

Clovis led 34-23 at the half, then expanded the lead to 19 midway through the third quarter before the Demons scored nine straight points to cut the margin to 10. Clovis led 44-39 at the half.

Salcido had 19 points to lead Santa Fe High, and Antonio Lovato added 16.

MONTE DEL SOL 73, ACADEMY FOR TECHNOLOGY AND THE CLASSICS 59

The Dragons jumped out to a 21-12 lead after a quarter and held on to give head coach Alfredo Lujan his 300th career win as a head boys basketball coach in a nondistrict game at Nina Otero Community School. Jaime Terrazas had a career-high 17 points, which tied Stephen Herrera for team-high honors for Monte del Sol (12-6).

Santi Archuleta added 14 and Carlso Ruvalcaba 11.

The Dragons finish its nondistrict jaunt with a home game against Dora in Christian Life Academy on Thursday.
