A roundup of Tuesday’s other prep basketball games.

The Capital girls basketball team did its part.

Now it needs help.

The Lady Jaguars kept their hopes of claiming a share of the District 2-5A regular-season title alive with a 36-33 win over Albuquerque Academy in Edward A. Ortiz Memorial Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Capital (13-12 overall, 5-2 in 2-5A) remains one game behind Española Valley, which beat Los Alamos 54-31, for the top spot.

If Capital beats Los Alamos and Albuquerque Del Norte knocks off the Lady Sundevils (13-11 6-1), it will force a one-game playoff for the top seed in next week’s district tournament.

“We have to take care of things, no matter what,” Lady Jaguars head coach Darren Casados said.

It was nip-and-tuck game, as Academy led 8-6 after a quarter before Capital battled back for a 6-14 halftime lead. It was 24-23, Lady Jaguars, after three, and they outscored the Lady Chargers 12-10 in the final quarter. Capital had a chance to ice the game in the final 10 seconds, but missed a free throw. However, the ensuing scrum for the ball took enough time off the clock that Academy could not get off a shot.

Casados felt the Lady Jaguars did a good job on Academy forward Gabby Roe, who scored just 12 points after posting 22 in a 47-45 Capital win on Jan. 27.

She had eight [points] in the second half,” Casados said. “Ishara [Sorensen] did a good job and we got help with the wings coming down to help.”

Capital sophomore Heaven Arciniega came off the bench to score a game-high 11 points, thanks to three 3-pointers.

SANTA FE INDIAN SCHOOL 80, BERNALILLO 34

The Lady Braves clinched the 2-4A title with another offensive outburst in Joseph A. Kloeppel Gymnasium in Bernalillo.

SFIS (21-4, 7-0) broke the 70-point barrier for the seventh time in the last nine games. Christie Abeyta, the Lady Braves head coach, said it was a combination of strong offensive chemistry and intense defensive pressure that has led fueled the high-octane offense.

“The passing is what really impresses me,” Abeyta. “It’s their ability to see the floor for one, and to do multiple things at once. It’s one thing to see those gaps in the defense, but to see those gaps and to cut to those gaps and see the ball reversal. And to see all of that happen at once is kinda fun to sit back and watch.”

Leanna Lewis led the Lady Braves with 16 points, abnd twin sister Camilla Lewis added 15. Hunter Garcia scored 12 and Franki Chavez had 13.

SANTA ROSA 56, PECOS 53

The Lady Panthers can’t say they didn’t have their chances to keep their winning streak alive, but a 15-for-35 performance at the free-throw line prevented them from winning their 15th straight game in a nondistrict tilt in Santa Rosa.

Not that it was the sole reason for Pecos’ demise.

“We gave up some easy shots, uncontested underneath,” Lady Panthers head coach Ron Drake said. “That’s why we gave up the 56 points.”

The Lady Lions (7-17) led 8-0 to start the game, but the Lady Panthers (20-4) were within 29-27 lead at the half. The teams traded leads, but an intentional foul in the final moments allowed Santa Rosa to run out the clock.

Trinity Herrera led Pecos with 17 points, Lexi Gonzales added 13 and Cassie Muller 12.

BOYS SANTA FE PREP 64, DULCE 40

The Blue Griffins officially claimed the 2-3A title by hammering the Hawks in Dulce.

Sam Sparks continued his hot hand with 24 points for Prep, and Sean Coles added 16. Dillon Abeyta continued to mature as a point guard, and Blue Griffins head coach Brent Cooper felt his “Big Three” had one of their better efforts. “Sam, Sean and Dillon played their most stable game yet,” Cooper said. “They definitely clicked tonight. They never got rattled.”

Prep (13-6, 5-0) finishes the regular season on Saturday at McCurdy.

MCCURDY 75, MONTE DEL SOL 39

The Bobcats took control of second place in the district with a convincing win over the Dragons in a 2-3A game in Christian Life Academy.

McCurdy (15-8, 3-2) built a 35-22 lead at the half before putting the game away in the third by outscoring Monte del S0l 27-13. Kemmer Croff had 25 points to lead the Bobcats, Ernesto Martinez scored 13 and Raul Arroyo 12. Monte del Sol (13-12, 1-4) had Santi Archuleta lead the team with 17 points, while Peter Lujan and Jaime Terrazas each had 10.

“We got out-coached,” Dragons head coach Alfredo Lujan said.

PECOS 57, SANTA ROSA 43

The Panthers relied on its defense to outlast the Lions in a nondistrict game in Santa Rosa. Pecos held a 16-14 lead after a quarter, but held Santa Rosa to seven points in the second quarter for a 28-21 lead at the break. Mario Archuleta scored 29 points to lead the Panthers (22-3), and Carlos Cordova added 12. Cody Schattsneider led Santa Rosa (15-8) with 16 points, and Stephen Sanchez added 10.

WEST LAS VEGAS 61, POJOAQUE VALLEY 35

The Dons built a 36-14 lead at the half and never looked back in a 2-4A game in Gillie Lopez Gymnasium.

It was a balanced performance on the offensive end, as Jared Saiz led a trio of double-digit scorers for West Las Vegas (13-12, 4-3) with 15 points. Steven Sandoval added 11, while Diego Gonzales had 10.

The Dons plays host to St. Michael’s on Friday, with the winner securing second place in the district. Paul Martinez and Dante Ortiz led Pojoaque (6-18, 0-7) with six points each.
