Santa Fe New Mexican

Political roundup

Plenty of endorsements: Ina robocall message to voters, mayoral candidate Kate Noble mentions she “was endorsed by our local paper,” apparently a reference to the Santa Fe Reporter, which put forward Noble as its first choice in the fiveway race. The Reporter has a weekly print edition, along with digital coverage.

But the editorial board of The New Mexican, which also is local, endorsed Alan Webber for mayor. The Albuquerque Journal, which prints a weekly Northern New Mexico section, endorsed City Councilor Joseph Maestas.

On another front involving Noble, former lieutenant governor and onetime Democratic gubernatorial candidate Diane Denish endorsed her candidacy this week. Noble “didn’t sit on the sidelines,” Denish was quoted as saying in a news release from the Noble campaign. “She put herself on the front lines by jumping in headfirst as a business and civic leader.”

Denish was lieutenant governor from 2003-10. She lost the 2010 governor’s race to Republican Gov. Susana Martinez.

Here’s your sign: City resident Stefanie Beninato said she has filed a campaign complaint with the city clerk regarding the placement of some of mayoral candidate Ron Trujillo’s campaign signs. Some signs, since removed, were situated on

public property, Beninato said.

According to the city’s code: “Political campaign signs may be located only on private property, with the consent of the property owner.” The city manager may instruct campaigns to remove unlawful signs within a 24-hour window or face a $50-per-day fine until they are taken down.

One large Trujillo sign, strapped to an iron railing at Old Santa Fe Trail and Arroyo Tenorio, was removed Wednesday by city code enforcement, Beninato said. A message left for the city code enforcement office Thursday was not immediately returned. But the sign was indeed gone.
