Motorist flips vehicle on I-25, lands near train tracks
A woman driving a silver Jeep Patriot on Interstate 25 flipped onto the median just south of the N.M. 599 interchange Friday and landed alongside the Rail Runner Express tracks, slowing traffic on the interstate, authorities said, but not the commuter train’s schedule.
The woman had lost control of the Jeep as she was driving southbound on I-25 around noon, according to Juan Ríos, a spokesman for the Santa Fe County Sheriff ’s Office. Her car rolled multiple times before ending up next to the railroad tracks on the raised median, he said.
The sheriff ’s office has not released the woman’s name, and more details about the incident were not available Friday.
The woman was taken to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center for treatment, Ríos said.
Officials from various law enforcement agencies blocked the left lane of southbound traffic on I-25 as they worked to clear the wreckage.
The Santa Fe Police Department initially alerted people about the accident but later passed the investigation on to the sheriff ’s office.
City police department spokesman Greg Gurulé said his agency
was told the woman was expected to survive her injuries.
Augusta Meyers, a spokeswoman for the Rail Runner Express, said the accident did not delay any train passengers.
The wreckage had been moved far enough away from the tracks by the time the 1 p.m. train was scheduled to run, she said.
The crashed car was cleared from the interstate before 3 p.m.
