Los Lunas shuts out Capital in 5 innings

-

It was a sign of how far the Capital softball program has come in just three years. When the Los Lunas Lady Tigers asked for a game with the Lady Jaguars this season, it showed the level of respect Capital earned. After Los Lunas sailed to 10-0 win in five innings in a nondistrict game at home, Capital (3-1) knows what it needs to do to reach the level of a program that has reached the state tournament for the past 11 seasons.

“I say it was good to play a good team like Los Lunas,” Capital head coach Sig Rivera said. “I’m glad [head] coach [Paul] Cieremans asked to put us on the schedule. The girls understand what it is like to play a tournament team that is in it every year.”

Lady Tigers freshman Alexandra Tenorio fired a one-hitter, striking out 12 batters in the process. Only Yamile Cota managed a hit, which she did in the fourth inning. Capital freshman Marley Cardenas struggled through her three-inning stint, giving up 10 runs on 11 hits and a pair of walks while striking out a batter.

“We need to work on our fundamentals for the rest of the season,” Rivera said.

Los Lunas improved to 4-4 on the season.

SANTA FE INDIAN SCHOOL 26, SOCORRO 0 (THREE INNINGS)

The Lady Braves (2-0) were very good in a 16-0 win over the Lady Warriors on Saturday, but they were better in the nondistrict rematch at SFIS.

Senior Ariana Marcotte fired a one-hitter, as the game ended in accordance to the 15-run, three-inning mercy rule.

“Our hitting came around a little bit,” SFIS head coach Oliver Torres said. “It was a little bit better than the last time we played Socorro. I think the repetitions are starting to come around and getting our offense in tune.”

SFIS beat Socorro 12-2 in the junior varsity contest that went five innings.
