Get ready to find a job
Right now is a good time to find a job. Consider that Presbyterian Healthcare Services, opening a new hospital on Santa Fe’s south side, is looking to hire some 350 employees, with 100 positions going to nurses but many other jobs nonclinical. You don’t have to be in health care, in other words.
The first career fair to fill those jobs takes place next week at the Inn at Santa Fe hotel, 8376 Cerrillos Road, with more to come on the last Monday of every month through August. The first job fair will run from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday.
But that’s just one employer. More seem to be hiring as well.
The Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce will have its 2018 Business Expo and Job Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 5 at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center, 201 W. Marcy St. This is an opportunity for job seekers to find a variety of positions. Especially for young people seeking summer jobs or a boost in their career, showing up dressed properly and carrying well-prepared résumés could pay off.
For more skilled and experienced workers, the creative enterprise Meow Wolf continues to hire everything from financial experts to exhibit designers. The tech startup Descartes Labs has openings for scientists and engineers, but also for sales executives.
There is even overlap between the chamber job fair and Descartes Labs (a vendor at the job fair), with the focus of the 2018 expo a corridor showcasing local technology opportunities, training providers, internship opportunities and summer camps in Santa Fe. New Mexico Tech Works is putting together technology opportunities.
For many in Santa Fe, the search for jobs can be frustrating at times. Right now, though, it appears that jobs for qualified people (and even some who aren’t) are available. Polish up your résumé. Take out that shirt with buttons (iron it, too) and be ready to talk to people about your future. A summer job now; a career later.
Opportunities are available now for people ready to seize them. Nationally, unemployment is at 4.1 percent and around 4.8 percent in Santa Fe — that’s close to full employment, which means new job seekers should be able to find work.
What an exciting time in Santa Fe.
