From The Santa Fe New Mexican:

March 23, 1918: Santa Feans were shocked today to hear the news that Robert J. Harvey of this city had been drowned while swimming in the ocean at La Jolla, a short distance from San Diego, Calif.

He had been stationed there with 115th military police and was a sergeant.

… “Bob” Harvey, as he was known by his many friends, lived in Santa Fe for many years and then went out to a ranch several miles from here.

When there was a call for troops he volunteered and entered … at Albuquerque later going to California.

He was regarded as an efficient soldier and was popular with the officers and men.

Sergeant Harvey was unmarried. Besides a brother, he leaves a sister, Miss Ada Harvey, who formerly taught school here.

March 23, 1993: Daniel J. Martinez figured he was about to be arrested, so he reached into his pocket to surrender his knife and brass knuckles.

Santa Fe County sheriff’s deputy Ron Barela panicked. He drew his 9mm service pistol and fired at Martinez, grazing Martinez’s shoulder.

The bullet did not stop there. It entered the body of Chester Radecki, who was standing nearby.

Radecki fell to the ground, dying instantly on Rodeo Road as Martinez and Barela began to struggle for the gun.

During the fight, the gun went off at least two more times.
