We’ve all experienced that feeling when, after a busy day, the easiest thing to do is go to a drive-thru and splurge on either a creamy Frappuccino or a box of golden chicken nuggets.

You can save money and time, however, by whipping up a substantial snack that will hold you off until dinner. All you need are a few ideas.

A favorite recipe of mine uses crackers of your choice as well as some hummus, soft cheese and baby carrots. Having enough ingredients in the cupboard to make little sandwich crackers is great because you don’t necessarily need to follow a strict recipe for this snack. All you need to do is gather some complementary foods that can hold you until dinner.

Smoothies also can be a great alternative. A favorite recipe of mine is simply one banana, a cup of orange juice, crushed ice, and a handful of strawberries and sliced pineapple for the perfect blend of fruity goodness.

For the sweet tooth, a quick and effortless snack is peanut butter and Oreos. Despite having no nutritional value, this combination balances the perfect flavors of chocolatey nutty goodness. Simply open a carton of Oreo cookies and either dunk some in the jar of peanut butter or get a heaping spoonful of peanut butter and place it on a plate alongside your pile of cookies. A healthier alternative for the sweet tooth would be to freeze grapes for a quick, sweet, cold treat.

Popcorn is another good option when you want something quick and easy. You can always get creative with your toppings. For instance, if you find yourself wanting something sweet but not overpowering, dice up some apples and throw in a couple of slices of cheese. If you’re feeling a little spicy, add some of your favorite hot sauce for proper zest. If you’re a fan of kettle corn, make your own by mixing in some sugar and cinnamon.

Last but not least, although they do take a little more time to make, nachos are always a good route. Simply choose your chips, cheese and melt in the microwave. Dice up a few vegetables, add some canned beans for protein and use some of that leftover ground beef from last night’s dinner for a more filling dish.

Recipes like these will no doubt fill you up and keep you fueled for the rest of the evening!
