Santa Fe Indian School sweeps Grants

-

The bats needed a game to get going for the Santa Fe Indian School Lady Braves. Once they did, though, the Lady Braves managed a nondistrict doubleheader softball sweep of Grants by 4-3 and 13-3 scores at SFIS athletic complex on Thursday.

SFIS (7-1) got off to a slow start in the opener, with the score tied at 2-all before scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 4-2 lead. Alexis Garcia did her part from the pitching circle, as she allowed just three runs while striking out six for the complete-game win.

Oliver Torres, the Lady Braves head coach, felt his team was still feeling the effects of Tuesday’s 8-6 loss to Capital.

“Our bats were really cold,” Torres said. “We couldn’t hit the ball. We were probably still getting over our loss to Capital, but we had a good postgame talk and talked about the need to refocus and putting the barrel of the bat on the ball.”

The Lady Braves responded with eight runs in the first inning, and Ariana Marcotte did the rest, holding the Lady Pirates to just three runs after the opening outburst.

Leanna Lewis had a double and a triple in Game 2.

Speaking of the Lady Jaguars, they won their fourth straight game as Alex Hernandez allowed eight hits and five walks while striking out seven Elkettes in the process in a home nondistrict win at Jaguar Field.

Hernandez also had three hits to help her cause offensively, while Sylvia Pincheira went 4-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Adaline Carrasco was 3-for-4 with a triple and a pair of RBIs.

Capital improved to 7-2 on the season, while the Elkettes fell to 4-6.
