SCHOOLS RE-OPEN AFTER SPRING BREAK — AND CLOSE AGAIN

Most schools will re-open Monday after a week or two of spring break. But then most of them, including Santa Fe Public School’s 30 facilities, close Friday, March 30, to observe Good Friday. Check individual websites for a schedule of closures.

COLLEGE TRANSFER DAY

Representatives from many of New Mexico’s four-year colleges will be on hand to talk about options and procedures to transfer to a study program to earn a four-year bachelor’s degree during the Santa Fe Community College’s College Transfer Day event. The event, which is free, runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the main hallway of the administration building on the campus, located at 6401 Richards Ave. Students can meet with advisers from the Santa Fe Community College and representatives from the institutions, which include the University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, the Institute of American Indian Arts, St. John’s College, Northern New Mexico College and Southwestern College. Students should bring their transcripts. For more information, call academic advisor Melba Ramos at 505-428-1880.

UNITED WAY EARNS GRANT

United Way of Santa Fe County received a $125,000 award from the Daniels Fund to continue its Family, Friends and Neighbors Program, which offers regular group and individual opportunities for caregivers — many of whom are friends or family members of working parents — to gain insight into child development and early education opportunities, among other programs.

“The Family, Friends and Neighbors Program is innovative because it creates another structure for high-quality early childhood education and a low-cost way to address the need for infant and toddler care in Santa Fe,” said Katherine Freeman, president and CEO of United Way of Santa Fe County. “Providers feel confident in the quality of care that they offer the children in their charge. The grant received from the Daniels Fund will allow us to continue and expand this wonderful program.”

United Way serves about 6,000 families in Santa Fe County.

OPERA HOSTS SUMMER CAMP

The Santa Fe Opera once again offers its Opera Storytellers Camp for students entering grades three through eight. The event allows participants to learn about all aspects of creating an opera, including writing, composing, designing and performing. A typical day may include a session on set design, libretto writing, creating character maps with costumes and composing. The fee is $495 but a sibling discount fee is available and snacks are provided. Call 505-986-5908 for more information about the camp, which runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from June 4-15.
