St. Michael’s girls will try to repeat as golf champions.

-

The champs are back, if only in a different time and place.

Declared the state’s top team in Class 1A-4A after weather wiped out the second and final round of last year’s State Golf Tournament in Farmington, the St. Michael’s girls look to make it two in a row as this year’s championship tournament begins Monday morning at The Canyon Club in Albuquerque.

The Lady Horsemen carded a first-round 388 to take a narrow lead in last year’s opening round, then sat in the clubhouse as wind and steady rain slowly made conditions so unplayable that the New Mexico Activities Association agreed to call off the rest of the tournament and hand the blue trophy to St. Michael’s.

In so doing, Carissa Padilla was named the individual champion. She is back and is scheduled to tee off at 9:30 a.m. Monday in a threesome that includes golfers from Taos and Mesilla Valley.

Also in the field are solid clubs from Hope Christian, Socorro and Ruidoso. Class 1A-4A has not had a back-to-back champion since Socorro won seven straight between 2007-13. It has not had a repeat individual champion since Socorro’s Kristen Cline in 2012-13.

Padilla has been one of the most consistent golfers this spring, picking up two statequalifying legs at The Canyon Club since late March with scores of 86 and 85.

She’ll get a stiff test from, among others, Janae Hill of Portales, Chelsea Medina of Silver, Alexandra Michelena of Ruidoso and Coco Andersson of Mesilla Valley. Even Padilla’s teammate, Miquela Martinez, will be in the mix.

Only four boys teams earned enough qualifying legs this season to get into this week’s 1A-4A tournament. One of them is Las Vegas Robertson, which is led by Noah Gonzales. He carded a season-low 70 in October at a tournament in Las Vegas, N.M., but did fire a 72 at The Canyon Club in March.

One of the individual qualifiers to keep an eye on is Taos’ Josh Fambro, who had a redhot fall season that he followed with a solid spring. That included a 78 at The Canyon Club.

The Class 6A tournament will be at Pinon Hills in Farmington. No one from Santa Fe High qualified.

The 5A tournament will be at Rockwind in Hobbs. Los Alamos is part of the field on the boys side. The Hilltoppers are led by Sean Rau, Davis Johnson, Henry Poston, Jacob Benelli and Logan Bishop. The five represent a team that won its district title and will contend for the title along with Albuquerque Academy, Lovington and St. Pius.
