Events raise funds for horse rescues
A series of events and fundraisers aim to raise funds and awareness about the plight of horses in New Mexico.
The Tamaya Horse Rehabilitation Week, May 29 to June 2, hosted by Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort & Spa and the Tamaya Horse Rehabilitation Program, offers daily educational programs plus a golf tournament and gala to raise funds for horses.
Now in its sixth year, the nonprofit rehabilitation program at Santa Ana Pueblo has helped 103 horses. The Stables at Tamaya has 52 rescue horses but only has the capacity to add five more rescued horses annually. Organizers hope highlighting the need will allow the program to expand to rescue more horses.
“Some of these unfortunate animals are dropped off in remote areas of our state without access to shelter or resources, and some are voluntarily surrendered. That’s where our on-site rescue team comes in to help give them a fighting chance,” said Herb Rackliff, the resort’s general manager.
The five-day educational and fundraising program teaches the importance of rehabilitation and creating a supportive environment for the horses to recover and thrive.
