FUNDS RAISED FOR JROTC PROGRAM

Santa Fe Public Schools recently received $5,400 in donations to support its Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Santa Fe High School, according to district spokesman Jeff Gephart. The donations came in following an April school board meeting in which the board unanimously voted to no longer accept grant funding from the National Rifle Association in the wake of a string of school shootings around the nation. Annual funding from the organization, about $4,000, helped purchase equipment for the program. Gephart said the Santa Fe Community Foundation donated $4,000 to make up those funds, while two anonymous donors provided a total of $1,400. The JROTC students have been racking up a number of local, state and national awards in recent years. In March, four students in the program earned top honors at the 2018 All-Service National Junior ROTC Championship, a marksmanship competition for highschoolers, beating out 25 other four-person teams from across the country. A second Santa Fe High team placed eighth in the shooting match, held at Camp Perry in Ohio.
