Santa Fe New Mexican

Just the facts — no witch hunts — please

Have we learned nothing from the Salem witch trials? The Santa Fe New Mexican’s recent articles relating to House Rep. Carl Trujillo are disturbing (“House District 46: Heated race hangs on slew of divisive issues,” May 20). Not because another man in power is being accused of inappropriate behavior, but because the accusers are not being investigated equally, providing a complete analysis of the facts for the public to review and decide upon.

There are too many unanswered questions in the so-called news articles on this subject. What specifically is accuser Laura Bonar declaring is “inappropriate” touch? A touch on the shoulder might be unwanted but it is hardly worthy of declaring inappropriate and worthy of resignation requests. Why did Laura Bonar not report the incident years ago? Why is Bonar making this matter known weeks prior to the primary election? What is her motivation and intention in coming forward now? How is Jennifer Johnson a credible source to corroborate her story?

How is Andrea Romero, Trujillo’s competitor in the primary, credible? She has a documented record of misusing public funds and only repaying a portion of the misused funds after an audit revealed this unethical behavior.

Trujillo is a Los Alamos National Laboratory employee and likely subject to routine polygraphs, depending upon his security clearance level. LANL has highly skilled polygraph examiners who are experts in revealing lies and discrepancies as our national security depends upon it. How is comparing the Trujillo accusations to the well-known Alabama GOP candidate Roy Moore, accused of sexually assaulting girls years ago, fair reporting and worthy of printing (“Trujillo touts polygraph results,” May 12)?

We need critical thinking, assessment and facts. I am a liberal Democrat who loves animals. I am not interested in Bonar and Johnson’s hearsay. I am interested in facts. The only independently verified fact reported in any of the Trujillo-related stories, is that Andrea Romero has spent taxpayer dollars on baseball games and liquor. Romero should resign from running on that matter alone. Trujillo’s documented record speaks for itself. If an impartial investigation finds he behaved in an unfit manner, then he should resign. But I’m holding out for facts, not witch hunts.
